Granted, this series has been in the works too long for all the pieces to line up perfectly, but the the fallout of Siege would suggest Steve and Tony would be more interested in seeking to redeem Wanda than damn her. The dismissal of Wanda as a villain and a threat seemed undeserved and not entirely in keeping with how other writers have handled the situation. I also felt Heinberg played his older characters a little harshly and overly antagonistic. It's necessary exposition in that sense, but a little awkward nonetheless. There's a bit of heavy exposition going on in the early pages as the Avengers bring the Young Avengers up to speed on Wanda Maximoff and Heinberg, by extension, caters to the newer readers who might not be familiar with past storylines. I won't say the script is completely flawless. Wiccan is clearly the focus above all others at this stage, but that seems only logical given the nature of the story.

As much as other writers have found success in books like Young Avengers presents, Heinberg proves he still understands them best. It's a real pleasure to see Heinberg explore the growing relationship between Wiccan and Hulking, the banter between Patriot and Hawkeye (are we still calling her that?), and all the other great dynamics this team has to offer. That deep, quality characterization is back in full force.

Back in 2005, Heinberg sold these characters on the strength of his writing. Whether or not Heinberg is eventually able to reconcile the presence of Steve Cap and Extremis Iron Man, it simply isn't worth losing sleep over. And for those annoyed at the seeming continuity errors in the story, the quality of the comic and the preface both make a strong case for ignoring them. Heinberg has a few curve balls to throw out over the course of the issue. I'm pleased to report that the events of this issue aren't as predictable and straightforward as I might have guessed. Many of the Young Avengers have ties to Scarlet Witch, for good or ill, and this is the series where the teen heroes attempt to confront her. Even the older Avengers present consist of the big guns of the original New Avengers. For any number of reasons, Chuldren's Crusade feels like a logical sequel to Young Avengers.
